# Kathy > [!warning]+ Orange - Moderate Spoilers Kathy is a bit older than Peter because she is meant to be his safe place, and it needs to be believable that he is looking to her as a safe place in the world. They have known each other since school. She is about 35–36 years old when Peter is 33. She works as a freelance software engineer, a total tech nerd, and is the technical driving force behind their joint Instagram channel @wir_weltenwanderer while Peter is the creative director. She is visually stunning—perfect measurements, perfect skin—yet she does not care at all about her external appearance and masks only when necessary. Her authentic self is messy, wild hair, random clothes. She values autonomy, freedom, and control, has strong trust issues, and manages relationships through rational, almost contract-like rules. She is autistic but doesn’t know it. At the beginning of the story she is pregnant from Peter. --- 1. **Kathy and Peter met in school** They were both the outlaws, different from everyone else. Kathy had returned from abroad at age 14 because her father was working as a diplomat. She had to repeat one school year due to the foreign school system, and Peter had jumped a year because he was gifted. So they ended up in the same class and could meet, which also explains why they are a bit more than two years apart. 2. **She stays with Peter although she knows he is gay** The reason why she feels safe with a gay boyfriend is because she knows he will not leave her for another woman. She has been afraid all her life that she is not female enough or woman enough to satisfy the demands of a potential man. For her inner image she is non-typical female: masculine character traits, total nerd, loves digital stuff, scripts, software, efficiency boosts. Her choice to stay with Peter is entirely rational, not madly in love—she just likes him and feels safe. 3. **She has a strong autonomy value and control issues** She wants to have a family but does not want a husband who controls her or asks anything from her that she doesn’t want. She is a bit like the girl from the Salander thrillers: crazy outcast energy, very radical about trust. She establishes clear rules like contracts and tests people by whether they uphold the contract or not. This is why the rule’s about Peters gay sex life are extremely strict for her—not because she cares emotionally, but because it is her proof that she can trust him not to leave or manipulate her. She wants total control; she is a control freak. 4. **The pregnancy and the broken trust** At the beginning of the story she is pregnant from Peter. They basically don’t have sex at all, except maybe once a year when they get very drunk—possibly on her birthday. Usually she takes the pill for this. This year she didn’t take the pill and didn’t tell him. She broke Peter’s trust on purpose. She noticed he had something going on with another guy but didn’t confront him. In her strange worldview, she decided Peter needs to be punished and also she wants children. So she made a logical calculation to get pregnant. 5. **Their relationship contract and the fight** They have something like a relationship contract, not written on paper but discussed clearly—a five-point contract that forms their relationship. Based on this agreement, him being the father means he needs to marry her. The fight happens when Peter finds out she is pregnant; she has to tell him. He sends her away and says he needs a break.
